How targeting to get more traffic

You will need to create an account with Google Search Console and add your website to it, in case you haven't already.

The international targeting feature that Google offers to all webmasters within its Google Search Console site is an often overlooked and rarely mentioned tool that allows you to tell Google which country (ies) you want your website to be in. better referenced.

Once you've given Google a list of target countries, you'll receive a little SEO boost for any countries you've specified.

It won't be a big change, but it can definitely be enough to make a small difference.

So if you want to rank well in some specific countries, rather than all countries, this can be a good option.

Indeed, the use of international targeting is a valuable tactic as part of an overall SEO strategy even if it is rarely mentioned.

In this post we explain how you can use Google's international targeting feature to help your website rank better in the country or countries that matter to you.

How to use international targeting

To use international targeting for better SEO in specific countries:
  • First of all, keep in mind that this recommendation will only work if you have a website domain name that is NOT specifically associated with a particular country, such as a .com, .net, or.eu, for example.
If you have a website domain that is associated with a specific country, like.co.uk .de .it or .br for example, then Google's international targeting will automatically see the relevance between the domain and the country.

Example:

Below is a website.it targeting Italy Google at the level of the international targeting function:

So If you have a specific domain for a country, you CANNOT use Google's international targeting to associate your website with a country other than the one that is automatically attached to the domain.

The example above, the IT site could therefore NOT be associated with another country in Google's international targeting, such as the United States for example, with the aim of improving its referencing in the United States.

If you have a business that is based in one country, but uses a domain name associated with another country, then there are many ways to overcome this, and make it very clear to Google that your business is based in. one or more countries other than what the domain name suggests.

These methods include:

  • - Create entries in business directories that indicate you have a presence in a different country than the website domain might suggest
  • - Enter your physical address and phone number in the header or footer of every page of your website.
  • - Creation of a Google My Business page which contains your address.
  • - Use a language and currency on your website, which is associated with that country you are targeting, rather than the country associated with the domain.
  • - Integrate a Google Map showing your location on the Contact page of your website.
  • - Include content on your website that deals specifically with an activity related to that country.
This could include writing a few blog posts about businesses, or nearby activities, etc.
On the other hand, you can have a generic domain, such as .com.eu or.biz for example, and want to get traffic from all over the world.

In this case, you could simply ignore international targeting and Google will not associate your website with any particular country.

But this is not a good option, because the problem is:
  • Even if you don't want your website to be associated with one or more particular country or countries, Google may not realize this, and may interpret certain signals in a way that leads them to suspect that you want your website to be,website to be displayed more prominently in the search results of some countries when in fact you don't want it to.
To prevent this from happening, you need to go to Google's Search Console.

To do this, log in and select the website you are working on, click on »Search Traffic«, then on "International Targeting" on the left side of the screen, select "Country" and make sure your site Web is on »Unlisted«.

The process is illustrated in the images below:

This will prevent Google from associating your website with one or more countries in the search console, and should prevent Google from giving your ranking a little boost in some countries, to the detriment of your ranking in other parts of the world.

Be aware, however, that other signals (like those listed earlier in this article) will communicate well to Google where your primary area of business is.

Associate your website with a specific country for a better rankng in a country.

As explained previously, if your website domain name is associated with a particular country (like.co.uk for example), then Search Console International Targeting will automatically associate that domain with that country, and give a small boost to your website.

This automatic association between a country specific domain and that country, as part of international targeting, can NOT be changed or removed.

However, with a generic domain, you can tell Google which country you want your website to be associated with.

All you need to do is head to international targeting as shown in the previous section and select the country of your choice from the list.

Below is an example of a generic website associated with USA:

How to associate your website with multiple countries in international targeting.

So far we've seen that country-specific domains are automatically associated with that country in Google's international targeting section of the Search Console tool; that this cannot be changed (although it can be overcome), and we also covered how to associate a generic domain with a particular country.

It is however possible, with a little work and a little ingenuity, to connect a generic domain with several countries within the International Targeting of the Search Console and therefore to receive a little help in all these countries at the same times.

Here's how to do it:

First, organize all of your website content into subfolders targeting certain countries.

For example, if your website domain is www.mydomain.com and you have pages that you want to reference in Italy, then add a folder in the domain, so the url looks like:

Exemple We Use Domaine

Use a similar approach for all the content you have on your website that you want to position in specific countries.

If you have pages on your website that you want to reference, then you can simply duplicate those pages, and slightly modify or translate their content so that they are not exact copies of the original pages, then add one of those copies in the country-specific folders you have created on your website,The hreflang tag can also be used.

In this case, the original url of the page you duplicated might look something like this:
And once it's been duplicated, slightly edited, or translated and added to country-specific folders on your website.

The new urls might look like this:

Once all of these new country-specific folders have been created on your website, go to the main home page of your Search console account which lists all of the websites that you have associated with your account.

Click the red button in the upper right corner of the screen that says "Add Property".

Next, type in your domain address and its country-specific folder, which contains all the web pages you want to reference in that country, into the dialog box that appears.

Example we use Italy:

Once the property has been added and verified, select it and go to the International Targeting section.

Then select the country you want to target from the drop-down list:

Repeat this process for each country you want to target with specific website content.
